Mit seinem neuen Song "Til I Change Your Mind" hält Teddy Swims ein flammendes Plädoyer gegen Rassismus

"How do you sit there and act like everything is alright?", fragt sich Teddy Swims, der sich trotzdem vorgenommen hat, solange für sein Gegenüber zu kämpfen "till I change your mind". Und das ist politisch gemeint, denn der Musiker schrieb seinen Song "Till I Change Your Mind" über den immer noch starken Rassismus in den Südstaaten der USA (Swims kommt aus Atlanta).

"So many people have platforms these days but don’t use them to say anything, so I wanted to use mine to say something. I’ve always said that I’ve wanted my music to spread love unity and be a positive force", sagt Swims dazu. "I wrote ‘Til I Change Your Mind’ a few months into the Covid lockdowns and shortly after the nationwide Black Lives Matter protests last year. This song really captures my frustrations with the racism I see by living in the south. So many people want to act like everything is fine, when in reality, our brothers and sisters are dying in the streets by the hands of police officers everyday. This song is written for the people that aren’t directly affected by racism and don’t recognize its prevalence today. I hope someday to open their eyes and change their minds."

Für das Cover-Artwork seiner neuen Single rekrutierte Teddy den Künstler Sage Guillory aus Atlanta, um ein psychedelisches Gemälde per Hand zu erstellen. Der Visualizer für "Till I Change Your Mind" zeigt unten die Entstehung des Kunstwerks. Guillory kommentiert: "This piece is about unity. I drew inspiration from the ‘Siamese Crocodile,’ a Ghanaian Adinkra symbol which depicts two conjoined crocodiles—a usually independent animal now forced to unite in order to survive. Which I believe is what we have to do in today’s world in order to protect, and most of all respect one another. Compassion is represented in this piece by the color blue. These crocodiles are existing and thriving in an ever expanding sea of compassion, love, and understanding."

Das Originalgemälde wird versteigert und 80% der Erlöse kommen  Soul Food Cypher (SFC), zugute, einer gemeinnützigen Organisation in Atlanta, die Freestyle-Rap und Lyrik nutzt, um Individuen und Gemeinschaften zu verändern. Die restlichen 20% gehen an Sage, um den Bau eines neuen Studios zu finanzieren. Teddy versteigert außerdem ein 45-minütiges Einzelkonzert mit Zoom, dessen Erlös zu 100% an SFC geht.  Informationen zur Auktion finden sich hier. 

"Til I Change Your Mind” folgt auf Teddys letzte Single "My Bad", die im Februar erschien. Noch in diesem Jahr soll die Debüt-EP des hochgelobten Soul-Musikers folgen.
