Live-Session mit "Best Friend" für die Late Night Show von Stephen Colbert
Die drei Staveley-Taylor-Schwestern alias The Staves waren am Freitag in der Late Night Show von Stephen Colbert zu Gast. Für die Sendung filmten Emily, Jessica und Camilla eine schöne Live-Session mit "Best Friend", ein Song ihres aktuellen Albums "Good Woman", der einen nostalgischen Blick zurück auf die Bedeutung von Freundschaften in der Jugendzeit wirft: "When I could be anything / That I wanted / We could be better than / Better than all of them", heißt es in den Zeilen unter anderem, und: "You can wear my clothes / Smoking into the clouds / Yeah, give me one of those". Unten kann man die Session ansehen, bei der The Staves an Klavier und Gitarre begleiten und in gewohnt betörender Dreistimmigkeit singen.
Gegenüber Stereogum kommentiert Jessica zuvor über "Best Friend": "The song is about friendship and youth. And pretty specifically it was about my group of friends growing up in high school in Watford where we’re from, our hometown. Shout out to them! And I think that sort of heightened sense of awareness and drama you have when you’re a teenager — you’re experiencing these things for the first time, and there’s no time in your life like that. But you don’t realize when you’re in it. And so there’s a lot of nostalgia of being older and looking back on that time. It’s kind of a magical time. Friendships are such a huge part of your life. And you’re sort of standing on the precipice of your adulthood and your future. And at that point, everything is kind of wide open, and it’s all possibilities. I think there’s a magic to that innocence. So that’s what was kind of driving the song for me."
"Good Woman" wurde in einer Zeit schwerer Turbulenzen für die Band geschrieben und aufgenommen, in der unter anderem Beziehungen endeten, ihre geliebte Mutter verstarb und Emily ihr erstes Kind zur Welt brachte. Größtenteils selbstproduziert (mit der Unterstützung von John Congleton), handelt das Album von Stärke – ihrer eigenen und der anderer Frauen; von Schwestern, Müttern und Töchtern. Von Liebe, Verlust und Veränderung. Von dem Versuch, eine gute Frau zu sein.
